Artist: Flying Lotus

Los Angeles resident Flying Lotus brings beats with a cinematic flare: "I see these tracks as little short films that play in my head." Flying Lotus is a free spirit: "I have this beautiful lemon tree in my backyard, and on a sunny day the light shines through. Little things like that inspire me." Flying Lotus is a Coltrane: "My greatest influences are my family, I'm lucky to have been around so many accomplished musicians." And most importantly, Flying Lotus is a visionary; get ready to meet your favorite new producer.

2012: With this time now upon us there is a feeling of inevitable momentum forward through our man-made linear arches of time. In a day when it becomes harder and harder for artists to truly represent their cultural surroundings and sift through the monotony of the machine, Sonnymoon takes the opportunity to welcome the future with their EP, 2012.
As a continuation of their previous foundation of sound laid down in 2010 with Golden Age, 2012 looks to the future with excitement and hope. This lush EP bubbles and flows with the feeling of space aged spirituals yet to come. Look not towards the future, friends, because the time is Now.

Artist: Damon Aaron

Damon Aaron grew up in the foothills of LA playing folk and country music with his family and noodling with radio shack synthesizers. He began to get serious about songwriting while working towards a degree in fine arts at UC Santa Cruz. Throughout the 90?s, he led soul and hip-hop bands in LA singing and mc-ing, and played guitar for others like the Breakestra, The Rebirth and seminal hip-hop artist Divine Styler. Eventually, he began working with several percussionists and developing a style informed by hip-hop, as well his interest in traditional folkloric and soul music of all kinds.

Are you bored with sounds bouncing off dry land? Letis dive. Breach the murky surface and discover a world without bounds. Between waving sea grass and luminous coral lies a submarine sound machine. Octopi wrap multi-arms around barnacle harps and seahorses pump organs to open oscillating oysters while mermaids spin kaleidoscopic starfish with bubbling bassoons.

More on Elephant & Castle : plugresearch.com/elephantandcastle/

David Vincent Reep (aka Elephant & Castle) isn’t really from any one place. The young producer has lived in Colorado, Texas, London and California. First picking up an acoustic guitar while living in London (his artist moniker comes from a particular London neighborhood), young David didn’t really come from a particularly musical background. His teenage years saw him introduced to the SP-303 and his musical experiments began.

Upon returning to the US, he spent time in Texas before relocating to California and attending an audio-engineering school in the Bay area. There he met many like-minded creatives while interning at Studio 880 and he delved deeper into music. An over-booked flight to Austin for the South by Southwest media conference one year culminated with a frustrated David going to a local Oakland record store and making his Analogue EP. That project would end up being his first foray into making music as more than just a hobby. Interest from Daddy Kev and Pitchfork encouraged him to take it a bit more seriously. The San Franciso Weekly wrote about the EP “sounds like a brief version DJ Shadow’s monumental Endtroducing….. album as visualized by Flying Lotus and his beat scene compatriots.”

David spent the latter half of last year conceptualizing and creating his full-length debut Transitions to be released on Plug Research in 2012. Explaining the music for this project, David states, “With this project, I chose music that resonated with me because I’ve found that if I get a strong emotional reaction from something, chances are other people will feel it too.” David, as Elephant & Castle, has grown into a versatile producer, employing both technical proficiency and intuition to push his music forward.

Earlier this year, the offices of Plug Research received a mysterious package from Lee Bannon. Inside was a CD-R with a note written on it, “this is my Fantastic Plastic LP. you wanna put it out?” The music was a grimy journey through beats that brought to mind Madlib and early Flying Lotus.

The indie label agreed to release the record. “This Fantastic Plastic project that I’m doing with Plug, it’s a producer album for the heads,” says Lee in a rare public statement via phone call. “I don’t see the radio masses getting it. It’s really, really dirty and I like that. It’s almost my ambient record.”

When asked about the title of the record, Lee explained, “think about everything in your life that is plastic. Even my deodorant has plastic, the headphones I’m using to engineer music has plastic, all my keyboards are plastic, I open a plastic bag to get my chips. Fantastic Plastic represents a world ruled by plastic. That’s it.”

Plug Research recording stars LANGUIS are all set to have their own summer of love. Hailing from the fra from sunny climes of Los Angeles, California, LANGUIS produce an invigorating, electric, acidic pop rush that startles the senses and broadens the mind.

FRACTURED is their sixth LP, a spicy amalgam of 3 LANGUIS singles in fifteen songs

Inspirations range from Star Trek, the waft of sag aloo, a dash of pretension, sex, eight years of righteous rule and the odd nod to twenty years ago.

In their ten years of existence, LANGUIS have released a whole bag of brill records, studied levitation, sampled humous kebab in almost every U.S. city, done some radio sessions, had a van and all their equipment ripped off, while recording extra tracks for all sorts of groovy compilations and flexis.

Their music has def beats, raw power, mysterious melodies, eastern scales, vocal harmonies, the occasional mental reverb, not to mention ripping guitar. LANGUIS are the happening sound of skinhead acid rock.

LANGUIS are a band that immediately bring back the happenings of 20 years past as well as what is going on today. The foursome formed in the aurora borealic regions of Los Angeles, California in 1997. They initially signed with Simballrec for the release of their first EP, "Homesick"

The past 18 months have seen a dramatic rise in the international profile of LANGUIS. They successfully toured the U.S., all while releasing a new single every four months and appearing on a stream of sampler records.

Now North American infiltration is at hand with FRACTURED, 15 mescal flavored tracks including the first three singles, some b sides and extra tracks all demonstrating the LANGUIS sound, a carefully measured brew, cultivated in the mushroom and poppy fields outside Los Angeles.

Artist: Milosh

Milosh (Toronto, Canada)makes music for the mind, body and spirit. Introspective, intimate, sensual electro-folk steeped in perfumed melancholy and luscious romance. Combining beats, samples, guitars, strings and the most silken falsetto voice since prime-time Smokey Robinson, the third Milosh album iiitakes the listener on an emotional journey through an exquisitely beautiful musical landscape.

Aclassically trained cellist, jazz aficionado, Neil Young fan and devotee of left-field electronica, the Toronto-based Michael Milosh does not fit conventional pop categories - and nor does his music. His first two albums, You Make Me Feel (2004) and Meme (2006), earned warm reviews that likened his different musical shadings to Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, Jamie Lidell, Brian Eno and even caramel-voiced R&B crooner D’Angelo.

Artist: The Life Force Trio

When one hears music discussed in regards to "vibes" and "spirits," it's usually just a pretentious put-on; modern posers trying to resurrect a long-last studio magic. Unless, that is, you're talking about The Lifeforce Trio out of Los Angeles. The vibes and spirits at play on Living Room are very much the real thing: Sly's funk and energy, Sun Ra's spacey jazz genius, the manic passion of 'Trane (Alice and John), and most of all Nino's own coolly effervescent soul. In short: this is a Living Room decorated with generations of musical vibrancy.

The Life Force Trio was conceived and founded by Carlos Niño (Ammoncontact, Build An Ark, Hu Vibrational, The Sound Of L.A. . . .) when he started production on celebrated soul-jazz singer Dwight Trible's Love Is The Answer in Summer of 2003. Enlisting multi-instrumentalist/songwriter and fellow Aquarian Dexter Story to be his partner in the project, Niño set out to create a progressive new sound. Many have asked who the third member of the trio is and Niño's answer is always the same, "the third member is floating."

When Love Is The Answer was finished, Niño and Story, together with friends and fellow musicians, started recording sketches for a new project. The writing process was quick and spontaneous. Within several weeks, Niño started fine-tuning what would become Living Room.

"Sly & The Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On and Fresh, Shuggie Otis's Inspiration Information, Sun Ra, John & Alice Coltrane and everything from French Impressionism to African High-Life and '60s Space Rock - to me, that's the vibration we were tuned to making Living Room," Niño mentions. "We just got together and made music that was open and from the heart. We all wrote music and/or directed the flow of a jam session, creating a very collective exchange," Niño adds. The "all" that Niño reffers to are multi-instrumentalists Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Andres Renteria and Gaby Hernandez, along with Niño's Ammoncontact partner Fabian Ammon and special guests, Derf Reklaw, Dwight Trible and Jesse Sharps.

Recorded by Niño in his Echo Park living room, and mixed by Elvin "Nobody" Estela with Niño in Nobody's bedroom studio, Living Room in Niño's words, "is a raw, spiritual journey on an elevator to a higher realm, with no enclosure - there's no chance of falling… it's like the wind."

Artist: John Tejada

Ever the innovator, L.A.-based DJ John Tejada throws the dance music world a real curveball, sliding past his critically-acclaimed 203. minimal techno scorcher Fairfax Sake on Playhouse to deliver an all-digital album. "Logic Memory Center is sort of what I call my computer album," says Tejada of his 10th full-length. "One concept behind it was to move away from my synth work and concentrate on sound design."

Somewhere between the funk of Matthew Dear or Luke Vibert and the pragmatic minimalism of Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin, Logic Memory Center caters to those who like their techno upbeat, modern, and tight. Tejada imbues Logic Memory Center with an air of breaking stylistic ground like Detroit gods...

Artist: Chessie

With their new album, Manifest, Chessie continues their musical exploration of the railway environment, this time focusing on the freight trains and railway corridors that simultaneously divide and connect America's landscapes. Manifest is an exhilarating journey through a realm of extremes, where stillness is shattered by jarring motion and cacophony subsides into silence. Using guitars, bass, drums, signal processing, samples, analog synths, organs, horns, and other instruments, Chessie captures the interplay between the manufactured and natural worlds that railroads inhabit. In doing so they've created their best work yet.

First gaining recognition through Gilles Peterson’s BBC1 WorldWide radio show with their 2008 track “Combiner”, Danish collective Boom Clap Bachelors (comprised of Robin Hannibal of Plug Research’s Quadron, Ronni Vindahl, Thomas Bisballe, and David Cytryn, with additional vocals from Coco O. (also of Quadron), and Liv Lykke) have quickly made a name for themselves through their soulful sounds infused with subtle synth and pop influences.

Signed to Plug Research Music in 2011, following Robin Hannibal and Coco O.’s Quadron deal, Boom Clap Bachelors say they’re most excited (and anxious) to see how the Danish lyrics of their upcoming EP release MELLEM DINE LÆBER (Between Your Lips) will be received by English-speaking listeners. But one listen to the organic simplicity of “Løb Stop Stå” (“Run, Stop, Stand”), the dancefloor beckoning “Testikularitet” (“Testicularity”), or the fluidity of “Skynd dig langsomt” ("Hurry Slowly") is proof enough that with Boom Clap Bachelors, nothing gets lost in translation.

Who said the words “Soul” and “Denmark” can’t be used in the same sentence?

Artist: Meanest Man Contest

Meeting Meanest Man Contest is like shaking hands with a newborn cloud. Their compositions unfold and bloom before wide-open ears. Ever growing shapes elevate from simple states. Tones roll out layers for crackling drums to bounce on. Words streams burst the surface to bless dry speakers. Undulating syncopation reconstructs the unexpected. Merit is floating abstraction grounded in strong urban influence.

Meanest Man Contest is based in the fog shrouded music hotbed of Oakland, California. The secret duo unveiled are > Quarterbar (beats) and Eriksolo (vocals). These fresh beat veterans build on strong roots. As founders of the indie hip-hop labels Rocketship and Weapon Shaped Records they released music from Anticon, the Shapeshifters, Substance Abuse, and Emanon. Meanest Man Contest radiate buzz with compilation and 7 inch appearances. MMC climb to the top with hushed electricity.

Merit is a drunken jazz serenade. Sound silhouettes filtered though smoky shafts of light. Don’t be fooled by the sway & wobble. Meanest Man Contest punch out lights with heavy drum swings. Creaky organs wail from floor cracks, rhythms ride skyward on glistening guitar strings, and cymbal-spun ceiling fans keep it cool. Merit’s compositions are comfortable like cracked leather booths. Meanest Man Contest offer a newsflash for fans of dj Vadim, dj Krush, and Prefuse 73.

Artist: Ola Podrida

In November of 2001, my band Figurine went on a short tour of Germany with Lali Puna. Our label there, Monika, set us up with a driver to get from show to show. She only brought three or four tapes to listen to on the drives, mostly techno. I'd never paid much attention to dancefloor-oriented electronic music, but listening to the same tapes over and over again (especially Kompakt's pop-leaning Total 3 and some 7's on Parfum) while driving through Germany made a giant impression on me.

So this record was supposed to be an extra melodic, minimal techno record with some sparse vocals. Instead, my technopop tendencies got the best of called Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake, because thats what I kept chanting to the beat while I worked on the tracks.

John Tejada (Palette Recordings) assisted me along the way, adding sounds to some of the songs, helping write and arrange a few, and then mixing everything in the end. Sonya Westcott (Arthur and Yu) sang with me on "55566688833,"Morgan Nagler (Whispertown 2000) contributed some lyrics and vocals to "Pretend It's A Race And I'm On Your Side," Erlend Øye (Kings of Convenience, Whitest Boy Alive) sang some words written by designer/animator/poet Geoff McFetridge on "All The Way To China," and Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley, The Postal Service) sang with me on "You Again."

I think that's all you need to know before you listen to the record, hope you like it! With Love, James Figurine

In search of some new, Black Spade migrated out west to soak up the vibrant Southern California vibes and promptly met producer Proh Mic at the famed Do-Over. The two hit it off and began toying with music, soon bringing I,Ced, another St. Louis expat in LA, into the fold. The collective was taking shape and drew their moniker from ‘Ced’s residence in Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives reached out to their old comrade Coultrain and he eventually moved out to LA as well. A jam session at the HVW8 gallery solidified the group’s identity and the creative relationship with it’s owner resulted in an eponymous EP in 2009. Made up of songs done with no intention of release, the EP was the first physical manifestation of Hawthorne Headhunters on HVW8 Records in 2009.

The creative process of the newly formed group was very natural. Members of the group liken the approach to that of old Jazz musicians; organic and instinctual, drawing from whatever influences they were feeling and writing about whatever was on their mind. ; They began plotting a full length record, but Proh Mic and Ced decided to pursue solo endeavors instead of focusing on the group and ‘Train and Spade became the official torch-bearers of Hawthorne Headhunters. The duo went in the studio and Myriad of Now was recorded, a 14-track collection of Funk, Electro, R and more that speaks on spirituality, sexuality and everything in between. Carrying on the lineage of Black music dating back to the Blues and the inception of Jazz, Hawthorne Headhunters melt influences together to break new ground.

During the summer of 2011 Los Angeles based label, Plug Research Music, picked up distribution of the album from HVW8 which brings us to the release of the first single from Myriad of Now called “If You Were My Baby (Reprise)” which also features the track “Teleport.

Artist: Ola Podrida

Ola Podrida began as a home-recording project for film composer David Wingo (GEORGE WASHINGTON, ALL THE REAL GIRLS, THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE), who began writing and recording a batch of songs soon after moving back to Austin from New York at the beginning of 2005. Upon completion of the recordings, he started performing the songs live with old friends Robert Patton and Matthew Frank, both of whom moved back to Brooklyn with Wingo in the fall of 2006, where they are now also playing with two other old Texas friends, Andrew Kenny (AMERICAN ANALOG SET) and Johnny Christ. Ola Podrida’s self-titled debut album was released April 24, 2007

Artist: Tensei

Simple X and Midas Wells were both born and raised in the city of wind. Chris grew up in the suburbs while Midas spent many of his formative years in the south side of Chicago. X recalls his teenage years when MCing was his expression of choice but the day he touched a beat machine that all changed and production became the priority. Midas was drawn to music through summers he would spend in Arkansas visiting his grandmother and her antique piano. Though his parents were religious, he got introduced to secular music through records played by uncles and brothers. He began dabbling in production with pause tapes and a Casio SK-1.

On separate paths, Midas and Simple X finally met at Southern Illinois University in the late 90’s where they shared a dorm. They were part of a collective of friends who all had hip-hop in common, among them Serengeti of Anticon and Open Mike Eagle. At the time X and Midas met while cyphering, though neither was ever a serious MC, but nonetheless the two built a natural rapport and friendship. It was in that dorm room that Midas and X would become musical lab partners, experimenting with sound and working within the limited capacity that their resources afforded them in 1998. Once college ended however, the collective went their own ways and pursued more individual paths, many still involved in music, but X and Midas lost touch for a bit. X got a “regular job” but still devoted his energy to production on from time to time. Midas continued making music and though he had several projects there were a few experiences that turned him off and Midas left music all-together for a bit.

A few years ago, Simple X and Midas serendipitously ran into each other at a friend’s gig in Chicago and mutual curiosity led to the seed for Tensei being planted. Soon, they decided to try and make music together. After spending some time honing their production chops, X and Midas developed a sublime synergy between the two. “We can speak with the music without much hassle,” explains Midas. They hail from the musical mecca of Chicago, so the two have a vast wealth of influence and history to inform their production. As a result, Tensei is not heavily reliant on samples. They play musical parts themselves with both real and digital instruments, along with working with session musicians and vocalists. Simple X used his knowledge of Japanese language and culture to choose the name Tensei, meaning ‘heaven star’, for the duo. Now signed to LA label Plug Research, the wide range and hybridity of Tensei’s sounds will soon be finding its way towards your ears. Stay tuned.

Artist: Exile

Radio is not your average instrumental album. Exile did not want to just put beats on a record. He wanted everything to be unique and different, from the starting concept to the final message of Radio. Sampling vocals off the radio, Exile overcame the challenge and succeeded in creating a positive message on an instrumental album. As Exile says, "Good and evil are present on the radio. With this record I express love in contrast to evil. I did not want to put an album out showing only my talent... I needed to share with the listener what I have learned from my life. In this case, the radio."

Build An Ark is a Los Angeles based creative soul-jazz ensemble that was formed by producer Carlos Niño (Ammoncontact, Hu Vibrational, Temple Bar Records) and singer Dwight Trible (of the Pharoah Sanders Quintet) during the hysteria that came post 9-11 in an effort to encourage peace and love in the world.

Along with this group are the Build An Ark singers who also hand clap and play percussion.

Artist: SHAFIQ

Shafiq Husayn grew up in Oakland, Watts, South Central, Texas and the South Bronx where he experienced Hip Hop in it’s infancy, joined Zulu Nation and ran with pioneers Afrika Bambatta and Afrika Islam. In the mid-90’s, Taz Arnold paid a visit to LA with a CD of Dilla beats. After hearing it, Shafiq insisted they join and create a movement – Sa-Ra Creative Partners Production Company. Sa-Ra translates to “the children of the powerful and infinite force in the universe.” Om’Mas Keith joined the group, adding his musicality and multi-instrumental talents.

In 2007 Shafiq began working on Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka, fleshing out existing beats and creating new music. ‘Ka’ refers to the spirit in the Kemetic language. Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka represents Shafiq in a state of mental and spiritual freedom that is in turn reflected in the music. Shafiq Husayn has always maintained innovation and growth as his purpose and focus. From producing with Ice-T to penning songs for Erykah Badu to innovating as part of Sa-Ra and now creating his own music, Shafiq Husayn strives to convey who he is through his music.

Vancouver based producer and musician Calamalka (aka Michael Campitelli) is focused on the heavyweight. Drawing inspiration from the intense musical messages of Bad Brains, Public Enemy, and King Tubby he forges dub glowing with rebel fire. Each beat bangs with a thundering crack and thump. Volcanic bass pushes cryptic incantations through the murky surface while mysterious melodies snake like shadows through shattered skies.

Artist: Roommate

With Songs the Animals Taught Us, Roommate brings us a new voice that is very much of its time yet somehow timeless in its appeal. He does not take the easy route of cynicism, instead choosing a more complicated perspective on the wonders, horrors, and contradictions of our culture. A sense of optimism pervades Songs the Animal Taught Us, even at its darkest, and this seems to communicate the larger message of Roommate: Even in the depths of despair, there is always hope.

Roommate's production draws on an eclectic array of influences, both past and present: The jarring dissonance of Xiu Xiu and Scott Walker, the down-home instrumentation of Neil Young and The Band, the electronic flourishes of Dntel and M83, the ethereal beauty of My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins- all are adopted by Roommate and refracted through his own distinctive lens.

Artist: Soulo

We say we are traveling toward the ultimate, but we are afraid to even nod at it. Soulo levitate from a point on the horizon and land on our step. Not to say that Soulo is courageous. Soulo is inward reflective rock- unsteady. A discrepancy worth noting is that Soulo illuminates what kind of musical terrain they go at with equipment and habits appropriated from ye olde rock, and its predecessors. With guitar/bass/percussion for a skeleton, and melody as prime fluid, Soulo make electric songs like a whale-oil torch illuminating the future.

In addition to running Plug Research, Allen has been DJing since he was 12 and producing since he was 17, while Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, The Postal Service and Figurine), his prime collaborator on Headset has been a producer since the tender age of 13...

A few words from Sonnymoon...

Sonnymoon encourages you to contact your animal side with Wild Rumpus, their second single off of their upcoming eponymous LP. As the title suggests, this cut questions what separates Human from Animal. it opens like the dawn with the morning sun, bright and boisterous, with the energy of a gang of thirsty animals at a watering hole. Forget your responsibilities and dance around like a fool for 4 minutes and 51 seconds, after which we promise you will feel more alive. ~ Dane∞Anna
